But will Israel reach detente with Iran? That's the real question. I think it unlikely, which is another reason oil prices will stay well north of $100 IMHO.

That would be a 180 degree turn, and erase the much touted raison d'etre for the Administration and party. Besides, Bush likes to remind everyone he is a war President. It would rank right up there with Paul's conversion on the road to Damascus.

The bigger issue is how much race will matter at the polling booths. I think Obama needs about an 8-point lead in the polls to squeak out a win. 7-point might only lead to break even when people actually have to pull the lever/punch the chad/draw the line to connect the bars.

"If the super hawk Nixon could reach detente with China back in 1972, than why not super hawk Bush with Iran in 2008? Especially considering that this is the only thing IMHO that could turn the upcoming election into a real horse race." I don't remember the Nixon detente with China having any impact on Oil prices back then or for that matter anything else. If Bush and Co. wants to do an about face after 7 1/2 years on IRAN with 1/2 a year left he will accomplish nothing except solidify my contempt for his utter failure in everything he set out to do. I am not against befriending IRAN. Such a move would prove useful to all. I have been against his orchestrated attempt in having our two countries collide on issues that have created the threat of war. This man is a failure,imo.
