The US doesn't have the oil it had during the 1950s through the middle 1960s.

But cars get much better mileage, so we could manage in a situation where most families had one car, like most of the 1950s.

<<if it decides to consume wisely>>

... which part of the multi-ethnic usa society will decide?
and there lies the seed of collapse of an experiment.

The US has all the essential resources, including energy resources, if it decides to consume wisely.

The US consumes too much oil, and cannot revert the process. It is not about how much resource it has, but how would you refine it. How do you increase refining capacity ? Equipment is getting rusty year after year, and have to wait another 20 to 30 years for new completion. IMO, there must be a painful & abrupt end to this consumption of oil. Gasoline will be at $5 or more per gal if the US is cut off from foreign oil.

If US cut itself from the rest of the world has some positive aspects. No need for fleets in the Mediterranean, Hormuz, Asia and bsaes abroad. Significant savings asd defense budget is slashed to USD100billion. Cuts in aid for Israel and Egypt the two biggest drainers in foregin aid.

Join LATAM Mercosur. Cut oil from abroad import ethanol from Brazil.

Join Mercosur turned Brazil and Argentina around. Bfeore Brazil would import wheat from Canada and Argentina would import tractors and trcukcs from Europe.

Another example: Kodak or Fiat would have to made two tiny factories: one in Brazil anoher in Argentina. Now they opne a huge one in a single country and serve the region from there.

After Mercosur Argentina became a huge trading partner. The US needs to harvest all that trade the LATAM does with the rest of the world by joining the Mercosur.

No, the US does not at this time have all the essential energy resources, unless you mean unbuilt nuclear power plants, unbuilt windfarms, and unbuild solar power projects.

The 60s and 70s were about international trade, growth and being an international economic superpower. Disconnecting from international trade would hit harder than WW2.
