You cannot give a nation of a few million who border on a regional superpower false hope. Pushing Nato to Russias border was damn stupid policy. Folks on the Bears borders need to take that into account when formulating their foreign policy. Folks tell me that Georgia expected US to intervene in some way. Now the dissolution of the friendship and the charges will begin. Ukraine needs to study this closely because they are not immune. Georgia is to Russia as Cuba is to the US.

I think yours is a good analysis of the situation, but I differ with you in that I think there *IS* something we can and should do.

Putin was smart to have made this happen so fast that America has no time to react militarily. But Bush should insist upon a return to the status quo when it is all over and should not allow Russia's actions to stand. It appears he has decided not to get involved and this is entirely the WRONG decision IMO.

Some idiot here today was claiming America was "imperialistic" in Iraq (in spite of the fact our actions there don't resemble imperialism in any way, shape or form). But Russia's move here is clearly imperialistic and the US needs to stand up and oppose it.

This is a huge mistake on the part of the Bush administration IMO to just stand idly by and let it happen.

I think you have some good points there. I generally agree.

BTW this isn't a partisan issue and shouldnt be. Poland, Hungary and Czechia joined NATO in '99. The Baltic Republics, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia in '04.

Taking it farther, is a mistake imo.

Yes, it was. We could have gotten away with it in the 1990s when Russia was extremely weak and depended on the West for help. Unfortunately, our policy towards Russia did not change with their change in fortunes and we are now reaping the rewards of that mistake.

Where are the Euros? What sanctions could you put in place for the folks who supply you with gas and oil? I would call pushing Nato to the russian border and giving false hope to the gullible Georgians reckless policy. I have been off SI for the weekend and i am curious if anyone on the right or the left sees it as i do.

I agree. If Georgia and the Ukraine were talking NATO, then they should have taken the next step and joined. What they did was talk about it and then did nothing. That made a man like Putin nervous and just the excuse he needed to make his move.
