the shoe is on Obama's foot when no offense is intended and nothing wrong is said.

Heh.

No disrespect intended, but I think you're being naive. Both the Democrat President and Vice President candidate used the term today in speeches. These kind of things are coordinated by their political teams. They were clearly intended as a slam toward Governor Palin.

Here's Biden - “There’s no way you can dress up that record, even with a lot of lipstick,”

Here's Obama - "You can put lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig."

Like you, I didn't get exercised by the comment at first.
(My husband told me that I need to stop being so neutral at first...lol.)

But the more I thought about it, particularly coupled with the stinky old fish reference (which could be a reference to McCain), I thought it might have been a deliberate dig.

Obama has a bunch of childish people advising him, and a comment like that would be exactly up their alley.

He also plodded his way through to deliver it. [He should eschew joke telling as he is rigid as a board.]

I also think he can't take criticism, so he'd be willing to engage in jabs.

Who knows?

The bottom line is that he was a fool to say it and even have this conversation at all!

Well Steve, IF Gov Palin hadn't just hadn't gotten a laugh 6 short days ago with "lipstick" and IF there weren't a couple of thousand reporters/muckrakers following every word she ever said, will say, and people she has known since birth, it might have escaped notice.

BUT because of the MASSIVE Media interest in Gov Palin, and Sen Obama, all their words are recorded....And when you look around you will see that there are literally thousands of blogs and bloggers (both sides) who are discussing this remark, you will see that it just wasn't one or two people who thought the remark was TOTALLY out of line!

Stick a fork in him, he's done....might be apt here.

Suppose McCain said in reply: "Just because the pot is black doesn't make it a kettle."

What do you think Obama's camp would say to that?

The way Obama set up the lipstick joke - and the way he delivered it - and the way the crowd responded - makes it clear that it was indeed a play on Palin's line. It was very questionable humor... he got himself into a stupid situation.

I do not want Obama as my president. However, the lipstick on a pig comment I did not take in any way as referring to Palin.

I don't think he meant it that way - but even his audience took it that way.

Really, really dumb. The best thing would be for him to apologize but when you're trying to campaign from atop Mt Olympus, that is tough to do.

Listen carefully to Obama's speech when he said that. There was a long pause - just to make sure his point was not missed - then he said it - and the crowd got right with it. I am not so sure it was innocent at all.

I think it's a kind of Freudian slip - Team Obama has Sarah Palin on the brain since last Wednesday. And her lipstick line too. That's why both Obama and Biden mentioned lipstick, which if they had any sense & self-restraint, they would have known to avoid. But they are spooked and flailing.

Of course, once you are dumb enough to mention "lipstick on a pig" in the current political context, either McCain is the pig and Palin the lipstick, or Palin is the pig. Why else did the audience laugh?

No message discipline at all. I'd give anything to hear the Clintons' private comments.
