On the left savagely demonizing Palin, the problem she really faces is the journalists digging up all the details of her two periods in office. Since the McCain campaign clearly did a miserable job vetting her and since they then clearly created a false persona for her, it's catnip to serious investigative journalists.

My guess is the McCain campaign is making an even worse mistake by trying to stonewall the investigation of the Monegan firing. Just makes it looks as if bad stuff took place and keeps the story alive, day after day.

For political pros, it's really a genuinely dumb move.

Turning a candidate into an object of ridicule has worked well in recent history, the right did it to both Gore and Kerry.

Palin is in the process of becoming the punchline to a joke.
