Jim,

Re: "Cyrix/NSM has a unique product and is exploring new areas of
the marketing spectrum with it. A much greater chance of success than AMD,
wouldn't you think?"

I'm not so sure ... I have gotten very good glimpses of NSM's process
technology through SEMATECH. NSM is definitely a "process follower"
and not a "process leader". Actually, AMD has more state-of-the-art
processes in production for advanced CPU's than does NSM. If this is
NSM future "process plan", then NSM/Cyrix will be relegated to the
<$1000 market ... followed by the ... <$500 market!! Making a profit
in this area will be extremely tough. NSM/Cyrix will always be "a speed bin
short" !!

Make It So,
Yousef

OTOTOT

<<tough road to hoe.>>

WILL YOU FOLKS USING THIS CLICHE GET IT RIGHT?

The proper form is "tough ROW to hoe". I have seen "road" here and on other threads at least five times in the past few weeks (hint - lots of down days) and as a former farm child it is gettin' to grate on me. One does not hoe roads, one hoes rows - of veggies, usually, and a tough one is full of big clods, weeds and rocks.

Thank you for allowing me to vent...

(Jim - not directed at you, particularly...)

Best to all,

Jeff

Assuming you are talking about the MediaGX, I agree. (The 6x86MX is in the same boat as the K6).

Cyrix's MediaGX competes in an area where Intel has no comparable part - integrated CPU, graphics, sound, floppy, etc. As such, Cyrix has a good design win with Compaq and a lot of smaller box makers.

What is a problem for Cyrix is that NO OTHER BIG companies (correct me if I'm wrong) have signed on to use the MediaGX.

I think Gary Stimac pulled in his one and only marker to get the Compaq design win - and has come up empty since then.

Down the road, I think Intel is preparing an integrated response to the MediaGX. At this point, it sounds like Intel will add the integration - graphics, sound, floppy/hard disk control, bus drivers, etc.- to the chip set. Intel already has the technology to make a complete chip set in one piece of silicon (440LX) so they can build on this technology with the additions of the peripheral functions.

OFF TOPIC RE: Road to hoe

Jim,

Where I come from we hoe rows (like in cotton rows), not roads.
I can't think of any road-making material that I would willingly hoe.

Yours for more precise imagery ....
