Thats a good point...but significant "extra" muscle also represents an extra risk long term. It has to be maintained, with high effort.

Ex NFL athletes come to mind. It doesn't seem to do them much good at all in the long run.

So in that respect, perhaps BMI still serves a useful warning.

Yes, it is. For the "over 40" crowd, the most important thing is getting thin. Let the body fat take care of itself. Most of us won't bother with it. As I mentioned, I think you are drilling down too far.

Incidentally, "Lp(a)," the hereditary Lipoprotein that causes heart disease, the one that is the most difficult to treat, is typically found in people who are the thin, wiry type that engage in marathons. This is an exception to the typical "Metabolic syndrome" type that makes up the majority of heart cases. Show me an athlete with a heart problem and little body fat, and you can bet a dollar he has Lp(a).

Davis mentions that he consistently runs into this profile.

at my age there is no muscle. it's boobs. plus easier to measure my waist by pant size.. i know which way i am heading.g

hit new low today 204. goal 199. then we see where we go from there... waist from 44 to now 38.
