THe Mormon reference was to California receiving what was reported as large amounts of money to fund the opposition. Of course they aren;t the only religion or group to fight it.

And they have every right to do so. This is the way it SHOULD be done, has to be done, by voting. Not by shooting abortion clinic workers or rioting.

But when you say that this is because, according to some religious beliefs, homosexuality is a sin, then personal belief is being imposed on everyone's life- something I think Lane wrote excellently about earlier today.

In fact, I just looked up a list of sins, and see that being a busybody is on it. :)

The Scriptures are not the ultimate interpretation of right and wrong for many of us, and while I accept that you have every right to believe certain ways, and to use the political system to impose specific religious beliefs based on ever changing concepts of "sin", I can be sorry that this is so.

How could it not be religiously oriented? The scriptures are plain and straightforward about all forms of 'sexual sins'....adultery, fornication, homosexuality, and bestiality.

Since it's not possible to take the scriptures literally, one always picks and chooses which are worth following. Which means the criteria, inevitably, come from the present rather than from scripture.

Kate -

The only place the Bible mentions homosexuality at all is in Leviticus. Are you going to tell me that you subscribe to everything in Leviticus? For example, do you think the punishment for adultery should be stoning? Do you believe male homosexuals should be killed for having sex with each other?

Leviticus has nothing whatsoever to say on the subject of lesbians. In fact, homosexual acts between women aren't mentioned anywhere in either the Old or New Testaments. So if we're going to base our positions on scripture, I would think that there would be no problem with lesbians.

You said that religious people would push back hard against any legal legitimization of those kinds of acts, but how many states have laws against any of them?
