I got 584 hits on my first try with "Subaru" + "oil pump failure"

It may not have been Subaru's fault though. A lot of people put garbage additives in because they got suckered in by some commercial. It changes the viscosity and can dramatically increase the stresses on the oil pump. Many auto manufacturers warranties specifically state that adding an oil additive, such as Slick 50, immediately voids the warranty. Slick 50 is especially bad because it contains PTFE (teflon) which, among other things, messes up the circulation system. Never put an additive containing PTFE in your engine, no matter who made the vehicle. Even DuPont, who makes PTFE, says not to do it.

Each car is designed for a specific oil weight and viscosity (i.e. 5W30). People should use only that oil type unless they genuinely understand the concept of viscosity. Putting in the same oil another car uses because that other car "runs better" is a mistake.

I think that the build quality on my 2000 Outback is for the birds. I will not be buying another Subaru.
