Leo,

Not "all screwed", just "slightly scewed" :)

You are correct that NT is a sepearate port to alpha, but in addition to that, all Apps must be recompiled to run natively. If not recompiled at source, they could still be run, but through DEC's FX32! (sic) on-the-fly recompiler (not interpreter). There is a 0.5 speed hit for doing this and watch out for those hidden bugs.

I hear the the source recompiles for alpha are relatively painless, but since the market was not there, not many ISV's bothered. But if Intel buys out DEC's lawsuit (Sh*t...I didn't mean to use that V*nni-centric word! :), then you may see Alpha really take off (instead of the HP/Intel Merced) and the ISV's start to port in higher #'s.

Can't wait to see that N/C at the Gala....should be interesting to see if there are many Nortelians milling the halls there....

PS- sounds like the installed bandwidth is getting better all the time. Just got a note from bell that their DSL system is up'n'running and will be avail. from selected ISV's shortly.

Pete

Pete wrote: "So what is this "port to the Alpha" nonsense??"

Maybe it is because the Alpha is a 64 bit processor, which uses a 64 bit Unix or 64 bit Open VMS. Most (all?) other Unixes are for 32 bit machines.
You need a optimized port to a real 64 bit OS to get all of the speed

Can somebody please calculate the effect of a possible deliverance of 100 000 VNC boxes to GM?
And what about the Nortel cooperation?
