If we came out of this say without exceeding large unemployment and are back on track with business as usual, why would future generations (citizens and politicians) not interpret this as:
its OK to do as many excesses as they see fit, we now have a solution out of this crisis (with whatever worked) and do a lather-rinse-repeat on even shorter scales to try and meet the goal of the day since we have a formula to come out of this...

Should the bailouts work without teaching those involved in it (both citizens and govts) a painful lesson such that they will not try it again say for next 70 years? the current magnitude may not be adequate since the cost of the rescue effort has not yet been realized

Do you believe corporations will trust govt solutions to work, give it time to work, and not lay off people rapidly in the new year in an attempt to save their skin taking a short term view? many of them may be toast either way, the real question is whether they will act based on faith in govt actions longer term or their own short term survival vision? those bleeding profusely may not have a choice, the question is about those that have some cash and can pull on their own for a while.
