[WSTL Q2 FY98 conf. call notes]

summary:

not up to the standards of previous calls. answers to questions were either evasive or recycled rhetoric.

i liked it when Seamans referred to WSTL's "strategic murder... uh, strategic merger" with AMTX. also, I don't think Gary's too up-to-speed on the TI C6x and what it really means.

no insights on BC or CopperGold. He did say that the two of the 'three significant signed contracts' customers were working on press release language, for what it's worth.

notes:

sees early success of cable modems, @Home, and TW RoadRunner as positive motivators for telcos to deploy ADSL sooner rather than later. also said RBOCs need to get going to meet the Telecom Reform Act's 14 points in order to gain the right to compete for long distance market.

WSTL shipped 5000 DSL units this last quarter for revenues of $4M.

Seamans mentioned that AMTX had a deal with France Telecom.

WSTL might do a secondary or float debt. no time frame.

hinted strongly in that Seamans way that more acquisitions might be on the horizon.

Seamans: "where we did not win contracts, it was because we didn't have DMT. as of Oct. 1 that is no longer an issue."

WSTL expected to have a DMT DSLAM by the time the WSTL/AMTX merger closes, which will be possibly in December, but if not, then in January.

The $5M loan from WSTL to AMTX: is available to be drawn on as needed.

Nortel: "NetSpeed deals with the Access business unit; WSTL with the Service Controller business."

BC: wouldn't confirm that WSTL hardware was being used. rehashed the same vague comments about non-exclusivity that have been reported in TeleChoice.

Expect DMT and CAP offerings to be priced similarly going forward after the merger.

Pat asked about whether GTE might mention ADSL in their upcoming Nov. 18 analyst meeting. Seamans said "i don't know."

a Mike Pappas asked good technical questions about the TI C6x chip and its ability in the future to support four simultaneous ADSL connections. Seamans referred to it initially as the "Motorola C6x" and then went on to stumble and hypothesize about its capabilities. Will the four-line chip use the same power as a singe-line chip? how will the four-line chip impact per-line pricing? Seamans couldn't say. Oddly, he also added that he thought the C6x might be able to handle a higher number of simultaneous VDSL connections! Don't think so, gary!

in closing:

all in all, a nervous and evasive session with no major news except that two of the big three contracts might announce "soon".

should follow up on the AMTX/France Telecom remark.

[Conf call]

Jas --

I still need CPR. :)) I was so nervous I could hardly speak. My hands were shaking. My mouth went dry. I don't know what I expected. I guess I thought Seamans was going to shoot me or something.

At any rate, I'll write up my notes and post them as soon as I can.
