Japan has made enormous invention in LEDs and solid state lasers. They have cutting edge material science, such as "gummy metal". The are effectively the only developers of ferrite materials. The have invented supercapacitors, and the tunnel diode (Esaki diode)

They also do a pretty god job with drug development

The Toyota production system has been adapted by industries all over the world.

Also the Yagi antenna on that you see on every roof.

The Japanese went beyond following about 20 years ago.

China is relying on Taiwanese, Korea, and Japanese schematics. (and to a small degree, Hong Kong schematics)

The high level central research institutes are doing good research, you can see that in the number and quality of the biology and medical research papers.

I expect China will be a heavy technology contributor.
