Cary,

Interesting answer. LLTC, MXIM, ALTR and XLNX all sell in PSR 5-11 range. Even though Twister's question suggested he wanted the best positioned companies for 5 year time horizon, are you really suggesting such beauty queens at current valuations? What entry prices might be optimal?

Also, I was quite surprised that you have recently turned bullish on Intel. Could you please trace the evolution of your thought on INTC: how you could have ignored it last year and why you like it today?

TIA,
SC

I own shares of AMAT, KLAC, NVLS, and UTEK. I started buying during the summer of 96. I made a big mistake by ignoring INTC, LLTC, MXIM, ALTR, and XNLX at that time.

Cary,
I noticed LRCX was no longer on your list. Unless I have premature Parkinson's, that was one of the stocks you chose last summer? Were you scared off by the temporary<I hope> loss of market share to AMAT? IMO, LRCX should outshine AMAT over the next 24 mos. as it's margins improve, causing EPS to skyrocket in % terms with the concurrent increase in Revs. TIA

Regards,

Brian

Cary, thanks for your help and valuable insight. Someone told me that svgi may have some technology that amat lacks. Is this true? If so what are the possibilites here?

To all: feel free to chime in on the above question. Also, anything to say about Varian, and Watkins Johnson? And does Coherent Inc. have a semiconductor unit? Thanks to all for your help.

regards

Cary,

I have owned and/or followed LLTC and MXIM for some time. Interesting
to see you mention them in this context.

You mention the "tremendous profit margins." I never cease
to be impressed by the financial performance of these companies,
LLTC in particular. But I have recently begun to ask myself: are
the huge net profit margins Linear enjoys an attraction
or a warning sign?

Linear is running at 36%+ net (!!) margins. Long term, how much
further can they grow those margins? Isn't there more downside than
upside here? If a larger competitor can make inroads
into the virtual-duopoly market MXIM and LLTC enjoy, and
as a result LLTC and MXIM can achieve "only" 15% net on sales, the
impact on the stock prices would be catastrophic;
LLTC could make an extended sojourn below 20 in such a scenario.

What do you think? Maybe we should adjourn to the LLTC thread.
