It's all relative, a gun is more useful for self-defense than a stuffed bear but not as useful as a surface-to-air missile.

This number is 4x higher than the DOJ data per annum over the same period, so it is suspect unless you reconcile the differences in the two numbers. And the idea that we start at 2.5 million after these two hard studies drastically lower then step down a bit from there is nothing but vaporware - there are no firm numbers that even come close by a huge margin.

Real conclusions require real, verifiable data that stands up to scrutiny. Even this study comes to a conclusion against your main point.

It is well known that many crimes in the United States are committed with firearms. Less adequately documented is the frequency with which victims use guns in self-defense. We used National Crime Victimization Survey data to examine incidents where victims employed guns against offenders. Between 1987 and 1990 there were an estimated 258,460 incidents of firearm defense, an annual mean of 64,615. Victims used firearms in 0.18% of all crimes recorded by the survey and in 0.83% of violent offenses.

Firearm self-defense is rare compared with gun crimes.

To believe they might be useful, does not help one answer how OFTEN they are useful. In my experience, they aren't useful at all, since I've never needed one, nor do I know anyone who has ever needed one.
