My niece is just starting a residency at 45k. Certainly enough to live on while she begins to pay her dues. Some Ph. Ds can take well over four years after one gets a masters.

I didn't start law school until I was 27 and banked enough prior to starting law school and working my old job on breaks during 1L to pay cash for the whole thing.

Medical school usually takes a bit longer as most don't go straight from college. Many need up to two years of science prerequisites plus all medical schools require that you have clinical experience before applying. Hard to do all that straight from college. For example I know someone with a science degree from Brown still doing almost two years post-bac before she can even apply for med school.

I've watched my two sons-in-law basically cruise through law school and California bar compared to the amount of time/energy that my daughter is putting forth in medical school. It's also difficult to put into words the amount of stress medical training and practice is.

Surgery training takes even longer .....

For me, it was

3 years of undergrad as a music major
(5 years as a professional musician)
3 more years of undergrad to finish B.A. and premed (I got a B.S. in genetics)
4 years of medical school
7 years of surgery residency (2 additional years in lab research)
4 years of fellowship in surgical oncology

===========

21 years, probably a world record. I should call Guinness'

I got 25K as a resident, up to 35K by the end of my fellowship
I obviously had to moonlight, I had over 125K in student loans by the time I started my "first job"

Then I worked my butt off for 10 years, and now I can take the time to be a professional musician again -
which is where I started !?!
