The barriers to entry for the surgeon occupation are very high, just like with being a harbor pilot. If we had a two year track to becoming a surgeon health care would be a lot cheaper.

Professional musician? Cool, what did (do) you play? The training for an MD is more rigorous than any professional level degree, without question. Despite everything, medicine still attracts the best and brightest.

I remember taking a computer science class from a professor who was previously a voice musician. She's a very good professor but she loved to talk like she's singing a lullaby. I often fell asleep half way thru the lectures.
