Roll your eyes and rewrite history all you want. But anyone who knows anything about this subject also knows that Reagan, far more than any other factor, ended the CW.

Well back into the 60s and 70s he realized there was an opportunity to defeat the USSR in an arms race because they were weak and we were [relatively] strong. And as president he set about to do precisely that.

Reagan's covert action in Afghanistan certainly DID have something to do with the USSR going broke. As did SDI, as did the Reagan Doctrine in numerous other areas of the world.

This was not something that happened just willy-nilly. Reagan's intent is very well documented.

In fairness, SDI had the dual objectives of ending the threat of nuclear proliferation, which is largely did (by virtue of giving us the defensive shield we now have), and to cause the USSR to recognize the futility in continuing its arms race (which it also did).

So, it can fairly and correctly be said that Reagan ended the CW. Had we proceeded under the kinds of idiocy the liberals advocated (under Carter), it is entirely likely the CW would still be underway today.

CJ, Reagan ended the Cold War by getting Jimmy Carter out of office.

"Reagan ended the Cold War, practically single-handedly"

Right. It had nothing to do with the USSR getting bogged down in Afghanistan, missing the significance of smart weapons and bankrupting the country by building the wrong weapons...

[rolls eyes]

I can't believe he says this stuff with a straight face. He actually believes that yelling at a wall brought down an empire. How can you have a reasonable discussion with a person who is so gullible?
