Of course, the actual Gov. is a plutocracy or more precisely a cleptocracy after having been hijacked by those co. and banksters.

Little Joe;

I can't think of one major program that the government runs well.

What you want to live in a cave? You are protected daily because the government runs a great military. You are protected from crime because the government in the form of a police force runs well. You are protected from fire because the government runs well. Your libray gives you ample books to read as well as other sources and does so running well. You are safe in the air and in the foods you eat because the government runs well. I get my electricity and it almost never fails because the PUD runs well. My mail gets delivered on time and undamaged because the post office runs well.

Everyone bitches about government just as they get the huge benefits every single day of government. Is it perfect, not by a long shot. But if people would work to make it better instead of constantly bitching - it could be even better yet. Unless you go live in a cave and eat nothing but bats and spend your hours drawing little stick men on the cave walls - you get the bountiful benefits of government.

Let me reply to a pet issue:

What is the legitimate role of the Federal Government?

1. Court system!
2. National Defense!
3. Police Protection!

Primarily and exclusively enforcement of the constitution from a strict constructionist view point.

4. Clean food supply?
5. Functioning national road system?
6. Oversight of extremely hazardous materials?
7. K-12 school system?
8. Post office?
9. Health care?

Run "well;" my definition of "well" is ongoing and consistent competitive value received for dollars invested.

The gov't may indeed do a lousy job of pharmaceutical research, as you suggest. However, with a friend who takes $3500 per month in medications for her Parkinson's, it occurs to me that no true breakthrough will be forthcoming from big Pharma to kill that golden goose. In theory, research sponsored by the gov't would do so because it would lower their cost burden in society. As is, there is zero incentive to solve the Parkinson's problem once and for all (ditto MS, Fragile X and others) and every incentive to find very, very expensive band-aides.

The solution I think isn't gov't and it isn't pharma (for these at least) but instead groups like the Livestrong Foundation and the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research -- hopefully outside the bloated, inefficient gov't and outside the desire of phara to medicate us forever.

edit: oh, and the solutions which will come from functional medical systems overseas. The FDA will block the drugs of course, but at least sufferers could move away and get a cure.

Little Joe,
You are so blind. 80% of the basic research that has led to almost all of our pharmaceutical advances have been funded through government through NIH and other government
based funding mechanisms. The private sector is great at adding little chemical moieties to already effective compounds so they can patent them and profit but not good for much else. The biotech startups are usually the result of university based government funded research.

So there
