"Obama needs to take a larger role when things go off the rails, IMHO."

So far he is making the same mistake Bush made in deferring to the Congress. The question remains. Is he a victim of Nancy or is Nancy simply his implementer! Good cop - bad cop routine?

Hopefully after the this first chaotic year, the new political currents will get aligned with one another, and we can have a smoother congressional caucus for the next three years to get other important stuff done.

I doubt it. My guess is we are seeing the "new normal." Partisanship is far too structured into the political culture and into the distribution of seats in the House; and far too much money can be spent on lobbying so that important legislation can't get through the congress in decent enough form to make a difference.

As far as I'm concerned, the present healthcare reform process is both paradigm of the future for important legislation that has lots of money structured into the present system; and a test of just how strong that paradigm is.

It's all back to my basic reform proposal: publicly financed national campaigns. The only way to drain the damnable effects of too much money out of the system.

Agree, in fact I would even say he should have pre-empted this.
With his popularity and the economic crisis he had a great window of opportunity to bring everyone to the table and make a real and meaningful change.
