>What is the point in being involved? If the country wants 'em, let them have them. Not sure there is anything worth saving anyway. It's a mean spirited place these days; not the USA I grew up in.

That's such crap, John... The USA you grew up in was at the tail end of segregation and Jim Crow, to say the least.

I don't think that's what RW meant. There have always been bad things going on this country. However, we didn't have the president get threated with assassination at every turn. It seems everywhere Obama shows up lately someone is toting a gun and at least once a week, a prominent R suggests taking him out might solve the country's problems. The latest was some R running for office in ID. I posted it tonite.

I don't remember people openly talking about assassinating Reagan or Bush I or Bush II, or attending one of their speaking engagements brandishing a gun in a threatening manner. Do you?

You'll have to take my word for it that in general, things were much more civil.

I was thinking this morning the 9/11 really did change everything. America in two quagmire wars, torturing detainees, huge ideological divisions and grid lock, huge deficits. People REALLY hating the other side. It seems the country is getting less wealthy everyday. Read an article yesterday that many, many cities are going to start turning off their street lights to save money. (Not that I think it's a bad thing) but it's pretty strange to live in an America where cities can't afford to light the streets. Very 3rd world. What goes next?

My other thought was that bin Laden won the war on terror. The US is crumbling from the inside. We are at each others throats. We can't solve basic problems.

No, it's really different now. Much more hate than I ever remember. Dating it to 9/11 might be controversial but it seems to be the time when things really started to unravel.
