I don't think the people in our government who are stifling development of our own resources could possibly be smart enough to have a master plan like that.

The people calling the shots are playing jacks on the tarmac. You're talking about people who could guide the Space Shuttle, none of whom have a thing to do with development of our own resources.

thoughts?

Yeah, I got a couple of items...

I don't see us ever being able to supply all of our own oil domestically. We will always need foreign oil. Most of our imports come from Canada, Mexico, and to some extent Venezuela. We get very little from the Mid-East. I'm not sure of the numbers (%'s) as I am not involved with the oil industry any more. However, I think we need to drill as much as we can, wherever we can.

Most of the Middle-East oil goes to Japan, Germany, China, France, etc. And I'd like to see those countries more involved in the protection of the world supply. However, politics dictates what a lot countries can or will do. Anybody want to see German or Japanese soldiers running around, again....or how about a communist country occupying Saudi Arabia?

I don't like seeing natural gas being used for electricity generation. I know the plants are relatively easy to permit and build, but gas is expensive. Right now the delivery system for natural gas is bottlenecked.....too few pipelines to deliver already proven and producible reserves. But, just go and try to permit a pipeline…across country.

Coal (we call them 'dirt' burners) and nukes make the only sense for electricity.

Right now there are applications, in varying states of approval, for 26 reactors to be built. nrc.gov Most of these if not all...are for sites that were already designed and approved for more reactors than were built.

If...a big IF...and when these get approval the problem will be finding the work force. Also, the high level waste is an issue.

Since the abandoning of Yucca Mountain is pretty much final, spent fuel rods are now being stored on site, and have been for awhile. If the plants spent fuel pool is full, dry-storage casks are being implemented. Thereby, making 105 high level storage sites around the country instead of just one. Don't get me started on the Yucca mountain issue.

A comprehensive nuclear policy needs to involve re-processing. France does this, and they supply nearly 80% of their electricity via nuclear, with very little waste. Gerald Ford started it and then Jimmy Carter signed the death warrant for re-processing plants in the United States. The fear was that some terrorist would steal some spent fuel a make a bomb. Heh…heh…too funny. Let’s just say you can not put a piece in your pocket and take it home to the lab. So we’re 30 years behind the curve in developing this ability, and will need to rely on partners to do this….or high level waste will still be an issue.

And then of course we have the “chicken-littles” of the world to deal with. Oh, no…CO2….we’re all gonna die from global warming or cooling, or, or, or…..whatever.

A nuclear reactor?? Oh, no….we’re all gonna die….from radiation…..run for the hills.

This is going to be very hard mindset to overcome. At least more people are now worried about the propaganda of CO2 emissions….so maybe nuclear can come back. The problem is the long lead time. If you started tomorrow you’re looking at 7 to 10 years before a single kilowatt would go to the grid. That is if the enviros and unions, didn’t slow or halt construction.

America’s nukes are aging. Mainly built in the 70’s with a 40 year expectancy, they are coming to the end of their permitted life. Many have been shuttered and removed. While the most efficient and profitable plants are applying for permits for another 20 years.

I know, I know…many say, “What about Three Mile Island, and Chernobyl??” TMI happened when the industry was in it’s infancy and lack of experience and human error caused the disaster. But the bottom line is this….the reactor containment held and there was no China Syndrome. This was old technology, we are now 3 generations of plant designs into the future. Also, because of TMI we are now one of the most heavily watched and regulated industries in America.

Chernobyl is a non-issue in America. That design wouldn’t have ever made it out of the toilet here, and the maniac in charge couldn’t do what he did. Most of those designs have been shut down…I believe.

So...with our power grid strained and the hope of the electric car to save the world....somebody better be thinking about where we're going to get the electricity. Oh, I know....we'll just plug it into the wall.

Anyhow…

A few months ago I was accused of being a politically correct troll. Which I deny.

Political correctness is in fact killing the language. It's too freakin cumbersome.

Van Jones has no problem referring to "whites" instead of "Euro-Americans". And frankly, in spite of the fact that he is clearly a racist, the fact that he refers to "whites" as "whites", doesn't bother me a bit. And to this day I use the term "Black".

Glenn Beck has people boycotting his advertisers because he called Obama a racist. Welllllll.....the way he handled the henry gates affair was pretty danged racist. And he has surrounded himself with racists, soooooo....let's call a spade a spade. I'm sure there is the argument that he has people in his cabinet and his mother and grandparents are white....Well, plenty of people called Bush a racist (do a google search) and yet he had blacks in a couple of the most important positions reporting to the government. In fact, if you look at the influence that Condeleeza Rice had, it was much more significant than a marginalized Hilary Clinton.

And the fact is, Obama's actions are basically fascist. Why is it not ok to refer to him as a Fascist? Bush was called a nazi all the time and the description wasn't close to being accurate. At least calling Obama a fascist is accurate.
