I am reading Bill Clinton's book the Early Years and it's amazing going back to the sixties and seventies when he was growing up and the Vietnam War was in progress the similarities between then and now. While at Georgetown he worked for Fullbright who was totally against the war when
Bill was a LBJ supporter. He gradually came to see how
useless it all was. The Gulf of Ton-kin being drummed up and fictitious just to egg on our zeal for revenge and leading us to not think but act.

I also like that Obama is being more thoughtful about what he does and not jumping at the command of the military.

Remember MacArthur or were you too young. He was relieved of command because he thought one way and the president thought another. What a hullabaloo that raised in my home when I was growing up. My parents thought it was terrible but of course we were conservative Republicans and the president was sticking his nose into military matters.

And I was going to West Point and Annapolis for dances and thinking the military was just the LAST WORD....

Does anyone remember what the Russians lost in Afghanistan? We were so happy to have them lose that we funded and armed "freedom fighters" (read:terrorists) like bin Laden with Stinger missiles that we tried to buy back later. Ironic doesn't even come close on this one.

As for Bush Cheney et all, almost everyone who has been in office wants to make money after- that's just our system. Nothing wrong with it.

Sure there is. They're whoring the office of the Presidency of the US. I'd rather them give the office the dignity it deserves - give speeches sure, but then donate the money to charity.

The disgust is more repulsive if you look at the swinging doors between lobbyist and politicians. "That's just our system"? Well maybe that needs to change? Maybe we need a King and Queen to give our leadership a sense of dignity?
