we went Downtown with our folks and saw the May Department store windows with displays that were totally wonderful wonderlands... I'd forgotten about that. When I was a tyke, we'd take the trolley to downtown LA to see the department store windows during Xmas season - back when, that's where you went to go shopping. Our moms would get dressed up in a suit or nice dress, sometimes a hat, heels, girdles, and stockings to go shopping. For that matter, they wore dresses around the house - never jeans or slacks. Summertime, they would wear shorts or peddle pushers, but mostly they wore a house dress. The hills scared us because the cars were all stick shift and my mom would drift backward changing from the brake to the clutch. Very stressful for a 6 YO and I remember it.
