Yet, the only conceivable means of becoming energy independent in the US, other than the very, very long term, would mean drilling offshore and/or in ANWR.

And you oppose both of those.

I would say rather that "the benefits to be derived are not economic". "Not just economic", implies that there are economic benefits.

Well "economic benefits" is more complex than it sounds, you could assign a value to some thing you are probably calling non-economic benefits, and call them economic benefits, but in dollar terms its a large net cost, likely in broader economic terms as well, but that isn't so simple or obvious as the dollar cost measure (even though dollar cost is complex enough by itself).
