I am always amazed at how much I get from my local library. This year they even had a book sale of excess and donated books for 50 cents a piece. Wonderful hardcovers in great shape. We bought a couple dozen.

US cities and states can cut 50% of their budgets without unduly affecting essential services.

Shutting libraries is a scare tactic used to intimidate voters to step in with a tax increase. Libraries cost very little relative to police and fire, and librarians do not get the outsized pensions bestowed on the latter. It's the generous pensions and not current services that will break local government.
