I think a big part of it is more and more Americans are seeing that it pays THEM to buy American. Even if American cars are slightly less reliable, even now, than Asian cars. If Americans choose to buy American cars, it's NOT protectionism.

In general I wouldn't say I know what Americans will want, I'd say the government doesn't know either and shouldn't try to determine what will be sold politically. The history of such efforts is one of failure after failure.

But I will give one specific about what consumers want; currently, for the most part, they don't want cars that have the disadvantages of current and near future electric cars. Hybrids are fine, because you still have the dense energy storage and easy availability of gasoline, pure electrics don't have that.
