When I revisit with my high school classmates in central Texas, I'm beginning to pick up on these kinds of vibes.

It's weird watching the various slogans and notions folks latch onto to deal with their anger and anxiety these days. Secession might make them feel better as a concept but if you ask them whether Texas National Guard units should stop obeying commands from the Pentagon, what would they say?

I don't see where the Sumter is in this equation, just a lot of anxious bloviating that cheapens and diverts the political debate we need. A country of stubborn, zero-sum regional factions goes nowhere fast.

As a student of the Civil War, I find this fascinating and appalling at the same time.

Certainly some significant differences, but too many similarities to dismiss out of hand.

Biggest difference, to my mind, is that this time the federal gov't would enter any hostilities with the clear upper hand, as opposed to playing second fiddle to the states, not to mention the precedent that has now been established.

I wasn't aware that Josh Marshall is thinking along the same lines. Benen has replaced TPM as my go-to site, and so sometimes I don't get far enough with my daily reading to include both.
