Don't recall ever claiming that the reduction in revenue received by Ireland's government since they began their austerity measures (measures similar to Portugal's: spending slashes, tax raises, cuts to future entitlements, etc.) was "larger" then the sum total of the austerity measures. Let me help your recall. "Notice that Ireland has the largest deficit, at 14.7%. This is in spite of (or more aptly because of) the enactment of severe austerity measures" Message 26540501 It wasn't your words, you where quoting someone else, but you bolded it, and underlined the last sentence. It wasn't some incidental comment you disagreed but included for completeness. Also you defended it. I replied "'Because of' isn't backed up in the article. Its a rather extreme claim." Message 26543752 You replied - "Not at all! Completely understood by every Irish economist and every politician there. Standard economics... " Message 26546466 In other words, intentionally or not, you claimed, that the higher deficits where because of spending reductions. (And that it was not an extreme claim, but understood by every Irish economist and politician, and was standard economics.) If the austerity measures did case higher deficits, it could only be because the reduction in government revenue as an indirect result of the lower spending, was greater than the reduction in spending.
