But what politician would appoint a poor candidate?

Looking at the politicians' political appointments, would a poor academy appointment be any different?

Anyway, I don't know how the best recruitment for an academy should be defined. I would guess I'd like to see a lot of NCOs from the battlefield admitted, maybe mixed in with the best ROTC men and women. The academies should be for separating the cream of the crop of our finest men and women in our armed forces, not another fraternity popularity contest.

Custer didn't know that he didn't know he didn't know.

Obama is an enemy of the United States promoting it's division and eventual downfall for his like minded radicals to gain more power. Obama knows what he is doing having spent 20 years in Chicago polishing his tactics. The politicians who applauded Mexico's leader attacking Arizona in a speech in our nation's capital should be removed from office as well, partisanship has risen above the welfare of the United States.

I think one reason to be very supportive of Academies is that many Universities take an adversarial position with the military, recruiters on campus and so on. As far as University ROTC being superior, I'm not so sure. Given typical university environment, I'm not convinced it is the best place to forge the leaders we want in the military.

Question: What do you think of my comparison between Obama and Custer?

One of my friends (the only off line friend I can think of off hand who is more knowledgeable about military history than I am) thinks that Custer is greatly underrated.

Yes Little Big Horn was a disaster, but his career to that point was at worst solid, maybe even exemplary. (Also I believe, but am not sure since its been years since I've talked to him about it, that he doesn't hit Custer quite as hard for Little Big Horn, as many others do. There is no reasonable way he avoids the hit totally, his orders lead to the disaster. OTOH there where other factors. And also many good commanders with solid histories of success wound up leading their side in to a disaster.

Not that Custer will ever be considered a great military genius, or that I think he should be, but perhaps he wasn't quite as inept as many make him out to be.
