I think most of the tea party folks are just ordinary citizens that are fed up with the existing state of politics (R and dem), fiscal irresponsibility, corruption and want to make a change. Most were probably not even political but have been stirred up due to the direction O is taking the country.

I can see why the dems party want to categorize, denigrate and make them appear to be extremists because they could be a threat if they ever gained too much momentum.

That said there are always fringe crazies in every group so there will be some here too. Also in some cases they will get a candidate running that will either split the R party or not attract sufficient independents.
