<there is some "corrosive" effect on society due to the wholesale ignoring of the law.>

Have you raised any children?

Stop playing with your food at the table or else.

*or else what?*

a)nothing - ooh, that's convincing
b)I'll tell you to stop again - wow, effective <S>
c)I'll send you to your room - cool, my toys are there
d)you'll get no dessert - hey, that's something I want!
e)you'll have to clear the whole table - hmmm, that sounds like work
f)you'll get swatted - hey, I don't want that at all!

It's all in the consequences. You can grandfather in the status quo if you want, but ignoring the immigration law is the equivalent of a) or b) and makes the law useless. Start enforcing it or else change it to something you will enforce.

No, the numbers would be vastly reduced. The guest workers would only be allowed in the numbers that are needed, and sanctioned by employers before immigration occurs. Their residence would be temporary, not permanent. That would not include the millions of "day laborers", "domestic helpers", (not to mention coyotes or drug smugglers) who come and stay at their leisure. One thing the pro-illegal position blissfully ignores is the toll human traffickers take on the population of illegals. They don't care if the US remains a huge magnet drawing all the impoverished and the ruthless criminals who will put that population at risk to get them here. How do you think Phoenix became the kidnapping capital of the free world?

>>But of course, there are many laws on the books which we do the same thing with<<

like the federal reserve mandate to keep credit in line with gdp - how did that work out for us?

let's start enforcing all reasonable laws and get rid of the absurd ones - like allowing corporations (BP) to restrict picture taking.
