>> We have people getting unemployment who are standing on street corners begging for work.

No, those people are employed as beggars. And in some cases, if they get a really good spot, make more money than you ever will.

>> The average unemployment check in the U.S. is $293. That's $12K a year.

But they're also getting free health care (Medicaid), Earned Income Credit, Food Stamps and other freebies that have to be given up if they go to work.

As I pointed out, it is a matter of public policy. That some recipients, or even most, are motivated to give up the money and work, is a totally immaterial point.

Ted, > The average unemployment check in the U.S. is $293. That's $12K a year.

A minimum wage job pays $290 a week.

No wonder there are so many jobs that only illegal immigrants will take.

i-node is right. Unemployment benefits discourage people from working at real jobs.

P.S. - I'm going to hear it from the bleeding hearts. Bring it on!

"And in a state like WA state they would be living on the street."

So? They don't have to work! What more could they want?

The problem is, i-node and his ilk are used to gaming the system. Since they do it, then everyone else is.

The average unemployment check in the U.S. is $293. That's $12K a year. I doubt even a single person in a low wage state like MS could live on those few dollars.

Ignoring your math .... I'll just tell you there are loads of people in this country that can live fat and happy on that.

I know someone who quits work every year for a month or so when he gets his tax refund (boosted by the EITC) ..... till its all spent .... then goes back to work.
