I think, axial, one point where you and I might diverge is with the concept of preparedness. Over the 5-10 year horizon, from my perspective, there is nothing meaningful we can do to cushion the blow, as there simply is no way of replacing $15/bbl oil. Not as energy, not as manufacturing input, not as food-enabler. The Energy Reality Tax is here to stay, for a long time, and all we can do over the next while is fiddle with the marginal effects.

Ok, that's not entirely true, we could do massively dislocating things like turn the entire state of Oregon into a "Three Sisters" hydro facility, but things of that scale are unlikely to be politically or arguably even technically feasible.

Hi Jim.

I didn't set out to intentionally misrepresent your position, but apparently that's what I did. Mea culpas. In your last reply your explanations come closer to my own views, but I will say that we all have a tendency to compare evolving circumstances, and use them as the basis for forecasting the future, against historical constants which were, themselves, aberrations of prior generations' experiences. Today we are ten years into the future of Year 2000, when many of us had similar notions, especially during the dot com meltdown, about ten years into the future at that time. I hope we'll all be having this discussion here again in Year 2020.

As an aside, I just had a recollection of an All in the Family episode where the character Michael Stivic, the son-in-law in the series, was proselytizing about matters environmental, the effects of aerosol sprays on the ozone layer, air pollution, the nation's contaminated water supplies, acid rain, etc., and the only way Archie knew how to respond to him was to call him a meathead.
