diapers ? The market for adult diapers should be pretty robust in the near future. I wonder who manufactures the bulk of these things and what their stock symbol is ?

OT - at least by now

Yes the weather sucks, to much time on my hands.

"It's really a philosophical discussion: whether or not to spend and enjoy one's life savings while young and healthy enough to enjoy it and/or save for unknowable medical expenses..."

100% agree

"In my family, we leaned toward the notion of dying with only $1 left as long as we don't become a financial (or other) burden on succeeding generations -- as long as any surviving spouse is taken care of... "

So far my family hasnt had the opportunity to do anything different then the above. My dad my break the chain. Philisphocially he sniffs around my place and asks which room will be his....I tell him he cant afford it.

"So far, my parents have followed that path, except for now when the fear of outliving their money is preventing them from taking a trip they've always wanted and IMO, can afford... now, to be clear, they've already traveled the world several times over when they first retired... this trip is much more modest and might cost a total of less than $10K!!! And yet, now they are reluctant to spend that despite having a substantial amount of retirement savings still and they are both 85ish..."

perhaps it comes down to value and interest. If they have done lots of traveling either the value or the interest just isnt enough to get them out. Not having enough money is an easy excuse not to go.

"I'd rather they enjoy that money now than inherit a penny from them... it's THEIR money, not mine... they've already sheltered us kids from medical financial burdens and decisions and that is plenty of inheritance for me."

I've had a lot of time to think about this. After providing for yourself and enjoying those things in life you were lucky enough to hope for, whats next? Ive thought about the things that made the most impressions for my family (bros, sises, mom, dad, nephew, nieces, kids whew...). What they remember is an "experiance" not a "thing". they couldnt for the life of themselves tell you what i got them for chistmas x number of years ago, but mention the go cart grand prix, or indoor skydiving, or family olympics and the jammering just doesnt stop.

Should I be lucky enough to reach your parents age and be financially secure, I think I would spend my time concocting opportunities of memories for my family. Then if there is any money left over perhaps my children and progeny will remember the fun times with the ole man. $200,000 for Hospice or an operation that might not get covered? go BK 10 months later than I would otherwise? Another $10,000 trip or a family memory, no contest for me.

"my daughter... who has already stated that she won't take care of us or change our diapers if necessary"

whats that saying?... be nice to your children as they will be the ones choosing your nursing home?
