<<<To my knowledge, neither network discussed the possible mental condition of the shooter except in brief, cursory mentions.

Do you think it was inflamed political rhetoric that drove the shooter?>>>

My understanding is that the vast majority (over 99%) of mentally ill people do not end up committing violence against others. The few that do, do so from some catalyst from the real world.

Do you think the kind of rhetoric (including images of gun sights) and talking of not retreating and reloading is the kind of thing that grown ups should be talking about. Is it wise? Is it necessary? Is there any reason for it?

If you're looking for a direct cause and effect - you're not going to find it. You know darn well Katelew that these issues are fuzzy. .........That shouldn't be the question you ask. It should be, ..."does Palin's political rhetoric contribute to the intense hatred some people have"? The answer to that is clearly YES. It is complete nonsense to argue now that Palin wishes an open dialogue between people of different political leanings to achieve compromise and answers to Americas problems. I hope that is not what you are suggesting her position is?
