Well, Katelew....I know for sure one thing. If our Government doesn't stop spending so much money on so many frivolous programs, we will be bankrupt. Then NO one, will have any money from the government.

Right now, the Government is CREATING the new poor. The retired people now have worked and paid SS all their working lives. Most have put away as much money as possible for their retirement, after putting their kids through college, and paying their obligations, all without government help. In fact, these folks have saved in SPITE of the cost of government and the taxes they are levying at every local, state and national level.

They have put their savings in banks, and investments. NOW, because of the collapse of the system in the last 3 years, there is NO interest of consequence, and the retired are having to invade their principle. The cost of living has risen, no matter what Obama is trying to foist on the ears of people. Gas is rising nationally -- now more than $4 per gallon. In fact, all energy costs are UP!! People can't afford to buy a new car, and especially so for only 10-15 mpg better.....

BTW, I know you must know that not only the cost of nursing home care is $4,000-7,000 or more a year...and the insurance IF you can find it, is prohibitive for most of these retired people.

These people are soon to be the new poor, and it is entirely the Government's fault.

We will have not only the Grasshoppers who have never saved money on purpose, but now we will have the Ants who HAVE saved, land in the poorhouse as well.

The reason is that it's a static measurement of a fluid group. People are continuously moving above and below the poverty line.

Exactly why we never get an honest number when it comes to poverty. They should be filtering data to remove people like just graduated college students who often have to except most anything out there initially but within a year or 2 will be finding starts in their chosen careers.
