<<That would kill bantering pretty quick. >>

Seems as though "IGNORE" will work as well.

FYI...Some thoughts on "banter"....from my thread's header:

Lastly, all these "rules" should not preclude some regular social banter, even during market hours. Not every single post needs to be about the market. No way I'm going to go without the wit that has kept the thread entertaining. Keep it fun, keep it light. We are here to make coin but also help to mitigate the boredom which comes from sitting in one's underwear, eating Pringles and watching a 30-minute candle take shape!-vbg

Not a fan of mechanized censoring.

Seems to me if such a thread has that level of interest, and the folks following it tolerate the activity, why meddle with it?

At best I would recommend looking at it on a case by case basis.

Maybe there are many of these type of threads that I don't follow, but isn't that a somewhat rare happening?

I'm against it.

i think you need to step back and look at what you tried to create with Silicon Investor. You said it in an earlier post. You weren't looking to create the best investment message board in the world, you were looking to create the best community platform with the best interface. SI was essentially a sales tool for yourself and Jeff to get business creating websites. You accomplished your goal.

In a way you are like cyber gods. You created an environment, you gave it the breath of life and it has evolved over times as conditions changed.

If you want this to be the premier investment website, provide the tools that will attract investors/traders etc....and see where it goes. Personally, if a thread becomes too busy, I simply unbookmark it. There are threads here that have a very high signal to noise ratio and some that are almost pure noise. Does it cost you anything to have both?

The only thing that I want to see changed is that ignored members disappear completely from my view. Seeing an empty message box still requires me to skip through it. That solves the problem of the overly verbose members.

...I'm not incentivized to focus on quantity of messages!

you are not incentivized to focus on anything except personal accomplishment at this point. Does it bother you if there are many messages on some threads that don't contribute to the overall intelligence of the site?

I think that before you make major decisions you need to decide what you are getting out of having the SI ball again.
Is it building the best online community?
Is it building the best platform for that online community?
Is it building the best investment website?
Is it reliving the golden days of the 90s?

Since profit isn't your motivation, you have to figure out what is.

Once you figure that out, make the changes regardless of what the community thinks. Then accept that some people will leave, some will stay and some will be attracted to the new SI.

A characters counter (not how many remaining) would help because of the Hawthorne Effect. Measuring changes behavior.

Tweaking the spellcheck so the box is marked
Preview/Spellcheck/Edit/Think About It
or
Preview/Spellcheck/Edit/Take Some Time To Think About It

would encourage those who think it's smart to post without editing to realize that there could be 400 or more people reading their post, even if most of them are lurking. The time it takes to read and consider a post before posting it is infinitesimal per reader on almost all boards. That step is not about spelling; it is about slowing the process of thinking and reacting to see if what got typed is what you meant.

While reading, including Adding SubjectMark for your new thread, I had 1 Mail showing normally in the header as (1), but in the footer, Mail had no quantity.

It cleared as I read that reply, but it may be something to look into.

Also, if you change
INVESTOR
to white, do you intend it to be outline white?

Some of us have chosen white or light backgrounds plus No for Fancy Blue Header.

I agree very much with daily limits but I would say 10 per board per day in order to keep the social aspect of the investment boards to a minimum and the quality of posts informative. Many do not want to see people who like to dominate certain threads by posting useless OT and one liners or posting their holiday plans as if they own the threads. New members don't care who is going hunting or to Italy and when they see this kind of talk they feel they are intruding on a closed thread so they generally won't participate

I posted an example last night and will post it again even if unpopular with those who feel they must bless us with their constant presence 50 times a day or more. IMO there is no way that newcomers are going to want to post on threads that appear to be a closed social club. Investment threads should be lean and mean with only posts that affect investments and in my opinion comments about the Canucks or other sports stuff, weather, partisan politics (not geo-politics that affect investments) and posts on DSK don't belong on investment threads.

I noticed it only got 1 recommendation which to me indicates that people are all talk and don't want any real change after all. For me, if I want to see sports scores from a hockey game I'll go to a hockey board. I also don't like reading too much in the way of conversational endorsements of others posts as in "yup" or other one liners. That is what takes up space.
