Jeff Matthews raises a good point in that piece, and one reason for the lack of visitor growth has already been mentioned here. But there's another reason I haven't heard mentioned.

When previous versions of OS X were released, people turned out and stood in line at the stores to get their hands on them. With Lion, they were sitting at home, cursing their slow download speeds (no matter what those speeds actually were).

At the time I wondered about that. I believe I commented on it. While it's obviously much more efficient to distribute software electronically, it doesn't drive traffic into the stores.

I don't think we have to worry about store traffic for this quarter, however.
