Frame Relay is slowing down signigicantly

Care to back up your conjecture with fact? Why is it that the #1 WAN interface for customer DTE equipment is Frame Relay (and growing)? Why is it that the #1 ATM equipment vendor is tanking still (FORE)? Dumb luck I would guess, no?

if they can gain ATM business, that is impressive
Actually it is the Cascade (ATM capable) product line that is contributing a major portion of sales right now for ASND.

Paul, re: ISDN being a dying or never-get popular business and Frame relay slowing down (assuming this to be actual) . From your next comment I assume that you believe ATM is where things are headed.

Ascend addresses this trend with the recently introduced GX550 smart core ATM Switch and adding multi-service capabilities including frame relay and IP to its CBX500 ATM switch. The GX550 is the first of its kind enabling service providers to offer sophisticated ATM services directly from the core (at OC-48/STM-16 speeds with SONET infrastructure capabilities). Similarly, the CBX500 ATM Switch enables service providers to respond quickly to market changes by making a broader range of services available on a single platform.

Ascend also introduced the Navis Family of network management products that enables service providers to track and bill for services over ATM networks.

Infonetics report confirms that ASND is gaining share (in ATM), currently reported to be 23%. So, things appear to be moving in the right direction.

That is a big "if", especially when CSCO is lining up contracts with their ATM technology more and more recently.

<<<Frame relay is slowing down significantly>>>

I gave you the benefit of the doubt initially, but recalled seeing research to the contrary...After much surfing here is the link: (for Jeffrey Forrest)

biz.yahoo.com

And the synopsis (for those prefering to stay put):

According to strategic research conducted by Frost & Sullivan, U.S. Frame Relay Equipment Markets, both segments of the market, access and switching, should experience very healthy growth rates through the decade and into the next century. Total revenues for frame-relay equipment are expected to reach $12.8 billion by the end of 2003. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 1996 to 2003 is forecast to be 31.8 percent.
