There might or might not have been a methane connection to the Permian extinction event. They don't know what caused it and methane releases are one of a bunch of possible explanations. It could have been a meteor strike - so maybe instead of worrying about methane we should launch a rush program to put up a meteor shield. Or it may have been a result of volcanic eruptions ... don't know what we should do about that.

Do we know for sure there is a connection? No. Should we take steps to minimize the danger going forward? Yes.


We know that a large meteor hitting earth would cause mass extinction. Should we spend trillions building a space based meteor swatter to minimize the danger just in case?
