If the Greeks stop their tradition of breaking dishes after dinner, they might use the savings to have a better life, or to pay taxes.

I believe it needs noted that the Greeks did not suffer a natural disaster, no earthquake (they are susceptible) no floods, no fires, just ~40 years of very liberal polices with respect to pensions, work hours and non-compliance with Greek laws. The current Greek economic problems are self-imposed. I will not make analogies although the thought is tempting. All from the very Nation that brought us civilization, the first nation states, etc., etc.

Also I concur with part of your thought process. I believe the Germans would be @ the forefront of any recovery effort from a natural disaster. The same would apply in America if & when-it will happen-a large earthquake devastates a portion of California. In closing, is America to bail out the current & politics as usual for example of California if California were to become insolvent?

Not an apples to apples comparison in my book. We're all Americans first and (insert name of state) second. This is because we actually had to fight and die and unite to achieve nationhood unlike Europeans who have sought to achieve continental unity by signing pieces of paper.

Europeans think of themselves as Greeks, Germans etc. first with their own cultural traditions paramount and Europeans second. Their values are too diverse too accept responsibility for other states, as we shall soon see as Greece will be forced to exit the Federation since it won't accept it's rules. And unlike an "Act of God" tornado the Greeks systematically lived beyond their means and now seek others to pay for their profligacy. And charitably enough others were willing to do it up to a point, but even so the Greeks don't even say thank you. Enough already

B: "The difference is Germans will pay their taxes and the Greeks will do everything they can to not pay them--

T: I never said the Greeks are innocent in all of this..........they are not...........but starving them is not a solution.

B: so why hlep a country like that?

T:I may not like the way the state of MS runs its business but if a tornado hits them or they get into economic trouble I am not about to turn my back or put them thru some onerous exercise to teach them a lesson. And that's what the Germans are doing with the Greeks. Remember............the EU is a country made up of member states............just like the US."
