Yet the world went to hell only after the GOP controlled everything. Too many of our problems globally can be traced to policies put in place the critical couple of years post 9/11 when we were all so patriotic and believed in government.. Certainly the repeal of Glass Stegal and strong balance sheets in our banking sector made it even easier for the robber barons..

The republicans have repeatedly tried to shutdown the government in order to cut spending

Yes, one of the most insane approaches to governance.

Yes, but the GOP has no credibility as fiscal conservatives, because although they do try to cut spending, they absolutely refuse to even discuss tax hikes.

A reasonable person would discuss both and come up with a hybrid proposal that gets us to balanced budgets, or at least to a deficit run rate that grows no faster than GDP less monetary growth. But right now the GOP is being just as truculent as a baby who doesn't get their milk. It's time for them to be reasonable and allow $1 in tax hikes for every $1 in spending cuts they get from Democrats.

And check this out, mel. The Democrats have actually offered to cut spending, if only the GOP will match those cuts with tax hikes. So the reality is that the only real impediment to progress on our deficits now is the GOP.

You have to admit that, because those are the facts. And you know I'm no fan of the Dems Keynesianism. I'm a vocal critic of their economic policies. But when it comes to the GOP, I have to call a spade a spade just as well as I do with the Dems.
