We're at the program's all-time low of 2.9 workers to each beneficiary. Coupled with ever-lowering fertility rates and ever-increasing longevity rates, we're late starting austerity measures. Of course, we won't, at least not until the younger ones are in power and get their shot at regulating the program.

The .765 contribution rate on gross pay has not been raised since 1990. The only factor being raised is the wage limit that a worker pays in (now at $106,800 to the Social Security portion only) - Medicare has no cap on what the worker contributes to it, but it's at a low .0145 rate. Now, incredibly, the .062 rate for the employee's SS share is now .042!, bringing in even less revenue in this dodgy environment. Our current stupidity will inevitably lead to the desperation.

The older folks will get screwed

There's a lot of geezers deluding themselves with the idea that they paid for their SS and medicare promises and deserve to get it.

They will. Good and hard.

Reality is catching up. In the best of circumstances the necessary adjustments would be painful. Leaving "solutions" to the same sort who brought us here guarantee this is really going to hurt.

Every time some politician suggests a lockbox where funds for his or her pet project will be kept safe from other uses we should all respond in unison: "Liar Liar, Pants on Fire!"

They spent Social Security, they spent the Federal Retirement System, they spent the Thrift Savings Plan (which wasn't even in their bank account, but they paid it back don't you know), they spent trust funds from stumpage that was supposed to be devoted to reforestation, and they spent virtually every money pot out there.

Bernie Madoff got his just desserts, but they are just dead, retired, or still lying.

the politicians who originally started this entire Ponzi scheme are dead,
