With SPOT instead of Iridium, you get continuous tracking [every 10 minutes] and no flat battery [lasts much longer than the 1 day of Iridium if it's turned on]. With SPOT, it's a single button push to get your message to the air charter company to come and get you. Or, a single press for an actual mayday call to emergency services. With SPOT, the GPS location is right there on their Google map after they click on the message.

Once Globalstar has the new satellites all in orbit, Globalstar's service will be much better than Iridium [other than over the poles and in some ocean areas - most of the Pacific Ocean for example]. Not many people are out on the oceans [out of coverage if they are thousands of kilometres off the coast].

The call quality of Globalstar is better than Iridium.

The one thing I despise about my Garmin 650 is that it requires a unique charging cable for the lithium battery pack. And they are almost impossible to replace overseas.. Couldn't even find one in Singapore.

So I have to lug around the AC charger.. a 12 volt charging cable, as well as a spare pack for AA batteries in order to make sure all my bases are covered.

I carry the 12 volt to connect either to a cigarette lighter, or my solar charging pack.

In addition to that, for me to download/upload data, I need a separate cable connector.

They should have adapters available for USB charging, and downloading.
