I don't think anyone has ever claimed that the iPhone is perfect. I don't use one myself. But if it were the only phone on the market with pinch-to-zoom in the browser, maps and photos, I would be inclined to get one and overlook its shortcomings.

Maybe some others can help here but I think I see some problems with your problems.

You can put emoticons in text messages. I know some of the auto-reply stuff that you are talking about is coming in iOS 6 which you will have in a month (maybe not with a jail broken phone?)

I think you can at T9 if you want.

Toggling between bluetooth and wifi. Why? I leave bluetooth on and it activates when I need it. I have wireless at home and work so I leave that on. I don't worry about battery life like you might have to on an Android. I only turn wifi off when I travel. No big deal.

Others want to add something?

You, know, there are a bunch of texting apps available for unjailbroken iPhones.

A simple search for SMS on the App Store turned them up easily.

And you can send emoticons using the basic Messages app. Just install the Emoji keyboard.

Your other complaints might be valid.

I think one reason the Messages app has been kept stripped down is that they've been working to make it operate cross-platform, and to all kinds of addresses. I can now carry on a text conversation on my iPhone, and continue it on my Mac when I get home. And a lot of my messages bypass the SMS networks, so they don't count toward my cellular bill. I imagine they'll add the frillier features now that they've gotten the behind-the-scenes complexity worked out.
