Nokia Corporation Faces New Challenge from HTC Corp.
Sep 20, 2012

Once an iconic leading phone maker, Nokia Corporation ( NYSE:NOK, NOK message board) now has to fight hard to keep a foot in the smartphone market, and things haven't been going too well. The Finnish company has had a number of problems in recent months and now it faces a new challenge as HTC Corp. (TPE:2498) unveiled two brand new smartphones running the Windows Phone 8 OS.

There was no doubt that there would be other OEMs offering Windows Phones, and Nokia certainly expected competition within the Windows Phone ecosystem.

However, there is a troubling aspect to the unveiling of HTC's phones. Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, was at the New York press event, and the words at the event led some people to believe Microsoft was showing favor for the Taiwanese manufacturer.

Chris Weber the head of marketing for Nokia, tweeted: "It takes more than matching color to match the innovation of the Lumia 920."

A quick look at HTC's Windows Phone 8X leaves little doubt the phone is strikingly similar to the new Lumias, and different from previous HTC original designs.

While HTC's 8X sports a smaller battery and comes with less memory than the Lumia 920, it easily matches up in various aspects and even comes ahead in some. There will be plenty of time to compare performance and specs, the fact remains this could prove a serious challenge for Nokia.

The decision to go ahead with the announcement of the Lumia range so early may prove to be a mistake. Nokia didn't provide prices and information about which carries would be offering its products in the U.S. HTC on the other hand, revealed the 8X would cost $199.99 and it will be available through three of the leading U.S. Carriers: AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon.

Nokia, really needs a win to reverse its streak, and the recent announcement coming from the Nokia-Siemens Networks Segment is a positive development. The 50-50 joint venture with Siemens AG ( NYSE:SI) recorded speed as high as 1.6 Gigabits per second on a TD-LTE network. Still, this latest rivalry with HTC may be more inspiring for shareholders, but the outcome will only be clear when the numbers for sales come in.

HTC is asking for a Nokia lawsuit. The HTC WP8 phones look way too similar to the Lumias... right down to the colors.... and they have the blessing of POS Balmer himself... sheesh....
