Jori, you were fortunate since you were at that vulnerable age 49 - 62 where individuals either do not have the employable high skill sets for employment, or are considered a potential health risk do to their age. Monday I met an heavy equipment operator, your age, who lost his job to information technology. He did not have the ability to operate the equipment with GPS technological. You must have had the proper skill set match!!!

Interesting that you would bring up heavy equipment operators and GPS technology. You have two people on this thread who actually understand that stuff. I am one of them. And I would have to say that this person you met who didn't have the ability to operate the equipment wasn't because it was too far advanced for him or that he wasn't smart enough. The only possible reason that he could have for not having the ability is temperament. He is obviously one of those union workers that refuses to learn something new. That GPS stuff is simply telling him where to make the next cut. And possibly doing some collision avoidance stuff. Yes it is precision stuff, but it's actually laying out a plan for the equipment operators to work with. This person you met is probably one of those useless union workers that got an attitude about a computer telling him how to do his job. Maybe he wasn't good enough to do the precision work that is required of heavy equipment operators nowadays. In which case, maybe he should have stuck with waiting tables.

This same situation happened at my nephews business. Many individuals were let go do to the automation of the assembly lines where the number of employees were reduced from 14 individuals to 3 or 4 individuals. Robots and computers replaced the position for the need for unskilled workers.

Yup, classic example of where union workers have priced themselves out of jobs. Once they start getting greedy, it makes sense for owners of businesses to do the large financial outlay to bring in automation. I guess in a sense that unions have been good for our economy in that they have forced businesses to embrace technology as a way to avoid union workers.

Hey! check it out! I finally found something good that unions have done for our society and economy.

Really? The IQ of 2/3 of the employees working in the factory where your nephew works are in the upper 3%? I think one of you is lying...

Once again, your operator story is bs too. Either he lied and you are gullible or you made up the whole story...Operating equipment with GPS is simple. I own such equipment.
