Aren't these iMacs basically disposable?

You could very well be right. It sounds like the current method of removing the glass to access the innards of an iMac may not be possible on the new models, given the new screen lamination process.

They already have a pretty good business in refurbished units. That's all I ever buy anymore. They're great!

I agree, Apple sells a ton of refurbished Macs. Two days ago they had the (2011) 21.5" iMacs for sale, and no 27-inchers, but as I write this, it's the opposite.

A lot of people balk at closed system architecture.

Indeed they do. It's one of the knocks against Macs for as long as I can remember, and it's only getting worse with the newer models. I understand the appeal of Hackintoshes given Apple's stance on user upgradeable parts. I await the upcoming Mac Pro to see what Apple does to it in that regard.

I don't buy into the not upgradable argument. What's to upgrade?

RAM, larger hard drive, or hard drive exchange for SSD, if you're so inclined. On some forums I read, the addition of an SSD is a popular upgrade for iMacs, and the ones that Apple sells aren't the best. The first thing I did after getting my iMac last year was add RAM. I didn't want to pay twice the going rate for it, which is what Apple charges. I did buy it with the 2TB drive though, no way I was going to attempt that install.

According to the info we have, the new 21.5" iMac will not be upgradeable for RAM, you'll have to buy it already installed, from Apple. That will no doubt come as a shock to many people. The 27" model will be upgradeable, however.

Yep.

An awful lot of people seem to like it, though, so onwards and upwards.

We buy one about every 5 years - does that meet your definition of disposable?

They are basically more expensive. Apple is levering more money out of our wallets for less machine.

- same price no optical - sure you can buy an external but externals are more expensive than internals - obviously Apple's had to pay for a lot of replacements of crap internal optical - a lot I think - more profit for apple if they don't have to screw with mechanical devices

- can't upgrade ram or drives yourself - more expensive - more profit for Apple

- hard to repair - this means the effective life of a Mac is shorter - if your Mac dies on day 3 years plus one you are sh¡t out of luck. Probably doesn't mean much as MOBOs etc don't die often now that Apple has cooling down pat but what it you aren't lucky? My quicksilver will be 11 years old Jan 28, still usable to some extent. Actually probably close in power and speed to my brothers low end iMac.

Apple is looking down the road to when solid state makes everything non-upgradable anyway. Motherboard, case and screen. Not even any wires.

I will probably be looking into a Linux machine, but Apple is betting I'm not your average consumer. There is no point in buying a Microsoft machine IMHO and google's machines aren't serious for anyone except extreme über geeks and people who only need internet.

My nano and maybe my phone is a problem if I abandon Apple but their are other devices. I can tell you that I'm very reluctant to buy any software or media from Apple because I know they are trying to lock us in. In fact one little application I really like I would like to upgrade. I haven't because the App is ONLY available through the Apple store.
