I have the perception that times have changed. Increased R&D may well be productive. Artificial Intelligence, SIRI, Cloud, mapping via aircraft... mostly internet software and huge databases. The code has to be written and it has to be tweaked to be real efficient.

Speaking of R&D... A while ago Corning (the maker of the gorilla glass) made a couple of videos (available on Youtube) giving us a futuristic look at the uses of glass. I thought they were pretty cool, and I wouldn't be surprised if Apple is working on some of the stuff shown there. Of course most of the ideas in the videos stretch pretty far into the future and involve products that Apple isn't even involved in (imagine a car dashboard or center console that is essentially a touch sensitive surface that displays and instrument cluster when needed or a route map, kind of what an iPad does, only much bigger).
